Ride 3 - What a corker!

Ride 3 - 10 March 2019
Distance 19.3 miles (Distance to Date 40.6 miles)
Time 2:06 (Time to Date 4:43)

So apparently green bikes are like buses!

Having spent a nice morning with my family in Beacon Hill Park, the plan was simple.  My wife would head home in the car and I'd jump on a green bike and bag some miles!

Eventually found one!

The assumption that I'd find a green bike easily near downtown Victoria was a bad one.  We see the bikes all around town, but when you need one they're pretty hard to come by!  The plan was to start at the park, so you'll see the first bit of my ride was just getting to the start line........  on reflection, riding east at the start would have been a much better idea!

Imagine my frustration when a few minutes into the ride I came across this!

That's right, FOUR!
The ride itself was great.  Weather was good, roads were flat and the route was a lot easier to make ground on than all the previous 'no exit' cul de sacs of Gordon Head.  The only problem was all the cool stuff I saw; it meant stopping all the time to take photos!

Points of Interest......

Beacon Lodge Lighthouse (48.40998, -123.36907)

The Cote family installed this replica of the Beacon Hill Lighthouse in front of the Beacon Lodge.  There is a plaque with more information on the family and their contributions to the community.

Moss Rock Park (48.4121, -123.34653)

What a gem!  At the top of a hill in Fairfield is a park with a huge mass of rock with moss on it.  Go figure!

The park is secluded, quiet and has stunning panorama views of Fairfield and the Juan de Fuca Strait.  Well worth the detour.

Blue Line (48.40679, -123.34848)

On stretches of Dallas Rd there is a single Blue Line.  This remains from the 1994 Commonwealth Games.......25yrs on, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest maybe someone used the wrong tin of paint?

Children's Tree (48.40875, -123.34775)

Only in James Bay would you find this sort of thing, right?  Wrong, it's in Fairfield.

Dream Catcher (48.40919, -123.34426)

I've ridden past this tree more times than I care to remember, but never noticed this before.  The slower pace of exploring on a rental bike means my eyes are open to a whole lot more!

.

Terry Fox (48.40933, -123.36904)

I had planned to avoid pointing out the well known 'touristy' sites of Victoria.  Nothing political, they're just easy to find information on.  However Terry Fox is a Canadian legend, so I'll make an exception.  You can find his statue at Mile 0; the planned finishing point of his famous monumental Marathon of Hope.

A few other pics as I took so many...............

Canada's Tallest Totem Pole (so tall, I had to turn the camera to a funny angle)

Ride 45 - No More Waterfront to Ride

Ride 45 - 23 November 2019 Distance 31.3km (Distance to date 1451.5km) Time 2hrs 38mins (Time to date 111hrs 24mins) The end is firmly in sight! My rides tend to be pretty unplanned; I tend to head to an area, circle an area and then colour it in.  This lack of planning has now left me with an east west corridor!  The good news is, this corridor should be pretty simple to complete! Ride 44 to Date Ride 45 means I am now complete east of Shelborne, with downtown being the only sizeable chunk left to go.  I've not saved downtown until last (as many people have assumed), in fact, quite the opposite; I have been putting it off as I'm dreading it! The ride was pleasant, finishing off oak bay.  Sad to finish my last little bit of waterfront, as the waterfront rides are the ones I generally enjoy most. Deer command a lot more respect now they're 'tooled up' The 'Greatest Street Name in Victoria' award goes to............. The end o...

Biggest news in Victoria Right Now!?!?!?

OK, so the biggest news is actually a tragic story which broke all our hearts.  But page A6 of the Times Colonist is a much nicer story to read!!! Ride 44 - Fan Tanstic?

Ride 44 - 11 November 2019 Distance 31.9km (Distance to date 1420.2km) Time 2hrs 31mins (Time to date 108hrs 46mins) A few weeks ago, I was discussing my challenge and progress with friend Blair.  In talking about my challenge, I told him my self imposed rules; anything with a street sign and a name on the map is a road that must be ridden..............then Blair said with a grin 'so you'll have to ride down Fan Tan Alley?'  Thanks Blair. For those of you who aren't familiar, Fan Tan Alley is Canada's narrowest street and is a popular tourist destination in Victoria.  A local claim to fame is that it was featured in Bird on a Wire featuring Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn!!!** ** I sat through 10mins worth of You Tube clips to link to and failed to find the scene.  10mins I'll never get back. It's just under a meter wide and normally pretty busy with people and w alking a bike would not cut it (especially after I nearly killed myself up Mt Doug to avoid ...
