Ride 17 - The Wild West

Ride 17 – 21 June 2019
Distance 12.3 miles (Distance to date 255.1 miles)
Time 1hrs 47mins (Time to date 31hrs 39mins)

After a few week and a bit of vacation (cycling!), it’s back to the grind!

There were two bikes to chose from.  One in great condition, one old and battered and smelling of pee.  Guess which one I ended up on!?

The west side of the map is going to be logistically challenging (I live in the north east corner), so I took the opportunity to jump on a bike after work and start colouring in the map.  Only problem was I started at peak rush hour; when everyone is in a rush but not really moving very far which made it a little uncomfortable being out on my leisurely ride.  Once I got off the bigger roads into the residential streets things calmed down.

mmmmm, amonia

Points of Interest.....

Old Ornamental Carriage (48.431875, -123.410472)

Just a cool old ornamental carriage.  There’s never a horse around when you need one.

Is it too late to switch to 'Victoria in a Carriage'

Bike in a Rock (48.43289, -123.410831)

Maybe I’m biased, but a bike mounted on a rock is a pretty cool planter!  OK, the flowers were dead and the bike was rusty; but that just gives it history and character.  The wheel was still running smooth and true.

No idea where the other half went

Victoria’s Most Patriotic Street (Norma Crescent) (48.43103, -123.40676)

Admittedly this street was probably adorned in Canadian flags as Canada Day was a mere 10 days away, but it was a pretty striking sight to see every house in the street decorated!  Maybe I’ll back later in the year and rescind this award, but for now it stands.

A street of patriotism is hard to capture in a photo

Ride 45 - No More Waterfront to Ride

Ride 45 - 23 November 2019 Distance 31.3km (Distance to date 1451.5km) Time 2hrs 38mins (Time to date 111hrs 24mins) The end is firmly in sight! My rides tend to be pretty unplanned; I tend to head to an area, circle an area and then colour it in.  This lack of planning has now left me with an east west corridor!  The good news is, this corridor should be pretty simple to complete! Ride 44 to Date Ride 45 means I am now complete east of Shelborne, with downtown being the only sizeable chunk left to go.  I've not saved downtown until last (as many people have assumed), in fact, quite the opposite; I have been putting it off as I'm dreading it! The ride was pleasant, finishing off oak bay.  Sad to finish my last little bit of waterfront, as the waterfront rides are the ones I generally enjoy most. Deer command a lot more respect now they're 'tooled up' The 'Greatest Street Name in Victoria' award goes to............. The end o...

Biggest news in Victoria Right Now!?!?!?

OK, so the biggest news is actually a tragic story which broke all our hearts.  But page A6 of the Times Colonist is a much nicer story to read!!! Ride 48 - Final Ride!!

Ride 48 - 15 Dec 2019 Distance 25.1 km (Distance to date 1532.7 km) Time 2hrs 11mins (Time to date 108hrs 12mins) Put a fork in me........I'm DONE!!! Since February 2019, I have dreamed of this ride.  I'd had all sorts of thoughts about how to end and how I'd mark the occasion.  In the end, I planned nothing.  With my wife heavily pregnant, the rides were becoming a burden and adding a celebration just didn't seem fair. In the end, fate gave me an ending; albeit a simple one.  The final metre of my final street was this................... The cycling gods delivered The last ride was a cold one, with the night's frost melting away as the sun hit. On the way there I also achieved a bucket list level accomplishment!!! Being early meant that downtown wasn't busy, great for a cyclist wanting to meander about looking for his last few random finds of this adventure. St Andrew's Presbyterian Church Just a blue cow.  I...
