Ride 37 - Conquered Mt Doug!!

Ride 37 - 14 October 2019
Distance 41.5km (Distance to date 1107.9km)
Time 3hrs 14mins (Time to date 84hrs 58mins)

Rich 1 - 0 Mt Doug!!! (2019).

I conquered Mt Doug on a Green Bike, all the way to the top, no stopping!!!

My hero xx

I have history with Mt Doug.  My 2018 challenge was to raise money for charity and I decided to do that by conquering Mt Doug.  Scaling Mt Doug to the equivalent height of Mt Everest.  Thats 60 ascents.

I didn't manage 60, I should have trained!  But I did manage to raise a wad of money for charity!

I may be smiling here, but..............
Anyway, the reason for the story.....I was out doing this ride on Thanksgiving which I realized while riding was the anniversary of the Everest attempt.  So the route became obvious, I was going to have to do Mt Doug.

It was savage!!  I do not have the power to force a green bike straight up the hill so I was reduced to zig zagging the whole way.  But an ascent is an ascent.

guess which line was up?

The way down was interesting too, my brakes failed!  guessing they overheated. Luckily it was pretty slow speed so I was able to use my feet to stop!  Just a heads up if you're thinking of trying it!

Points of Interest.....

Mt Doug Summit (48.46626, -123.34649)

There are easier ways to get there, but Mt Doug summit is a must for anyone visiting.  On a clear day you can get great views of Mt Baker and on a really clear day, you can see Mt Ranier (fun fact: Mt Ranier is an active volcano!).  Mt Doug is relatively speaking a pretty small climb, but it's steep enough to get anyone's heart pumping!

The effort in getting here is not reflected by the quality of the photo

Ride 45 - No More Waterfront to Ride

Ride 45 - 23 November 2019 Distance 31.3km (Distance to date 1451.5km) Time 2hrs 38mins (Time to date 111hrs 24mins) The end is firmly in sight! My rides tend to be pretty unplanned; I tend to head to an area, circle an area and then colour it in.  This lack of planning has now left me with an east west corridor!  The good news is, this corridor should be pretty simple to complete! Ride 44 to Date Ride 45 means I am now complete east of Shelborne, with downtown being the only sizeable chunk left to go.  I've not saved downtown until last (as many people have assumed), in fact, quite the opposite; I have been putting it off as I'm dreading it! The ride was pleasant, finishing off oak bay.  Sad to finish my last little bit of waterfront, as the waterfront rides are the ones I generally enjoy most. Deer command a lot more respect now they're 'tooled up' The 'Greatest Street Name in Victoria' award goes to............. The end o...

Biggest news in Victoria Right Now!?!?!?

OK, so the biggest news is actually a tragic story which broke all our hearts.  But page A6 of the Times Colonist is a much nicer story to read!!! Ride 48 - Final Ride!!

Ride 48 - 15 Dec 2019 Distance 25.1 km (Distance to date 1532.7 km) Time 2hrs 11mins (Time to date 108hrs 12mins) Put a fork in me........I'm DONE!!! Since February 2019, I have dreamed of this ride.  I'd had all sorts of thoughts about how to end and how I'd mark the occasion.  In the end, I planned nothing.  With my wife heavily pregnant, the rides were becoming a burden and adding a celebration just didn't seem fair. In the end, fate gave me an ending; albeit a simple one.  The final metre of my final street was this................... The cycling gods delivered The last ride was a cold one, with the night's frost melting away as the sun hit. On the way there I also achieved a bucket list level accomplishment!!! Being early meant that downtown wasn't busy, great for a cyclist wanting to meander about looking for his last few random finds of this adventure.
