Ride 42 - The Big One

Ride 42 - 2 November 2019
Distance 83.4km (Distance to date 1355.6km)
Time 6hrs 7mins (Time to date 103hrs 29mins)

With time running out, I needed this.  A big day in the saddle.  6hrs and 7mins!!  (that's time moving!).

The day started with a bang.  My team mates at Human Powered Racing were joining me for a couple of hours, so we had 12 of us out painting the streets!!

To make it a bit of fun (and avoid a hazardous mobile road block), we split into teams of four and made a race of it.  But not a typical race, each team had the same area to cover; the challenge was to do it in the shortest possible distance, with time not a factor.  I imagine this was hard to compute for triathletes!

I'm proud to report my team won.....looks like I have picked up some utterly useless skills in the past 10 months!

My first company, after 10 months of solo riding!

When I moved to Victoria six and a half years ago, I was pretty consistently told I didn't want to live in Esquimalt as it 'wasn't the nicest area'.  How wrong that advice was!  The Esquimalt peninsular has quaint little streets, big modern condos and fabulous waterfront access.  The other great thing about this area is the waterfront is quiet, and it is only a few km away from the popular downtown waterfront areas.

Obviously the peninsular isn't as affluent as other areas of Victoria, but being affluent doesn't means it's nice to live there.  You certainly don't need to avoid Esquimalt, I certainly enjoyed my day exploring!

It's becoming an obsession!

Well it made me Smile!

Bee Crossing (48.43468, -123.39214)

Crosswalk with a difference.  Bee safe while crossing the road.  *groan*

There is a buzz in this neighbourhood

Saxe Point (48.421898, -123.418993)

Not only one of the best pictures I've ever taken, but one of the best parks in Victoria!  This waterfront park has been quiet and peaceful everytime I've been and offers stunning sea views.  I have even heard of Orca sightings here!

I take so many pictures, a few of them had to be good!

Westsong Way (48.425055, -123.376321)

This walkway follows the inner harbour through Vic West.  The harbour is bustling with Sea Planes, Ferries, Kayaks and Pickle Boats in the nice weather and this walkway offers a great vantage point to observe!

In my defence, it's hard to picture a walkway

Ride 45 - No More Waterfront to Ride

Ride 45 - 23 November 2019 Distance 31.3km (Distance to date 1451.5km) Time 2hrs 38mins (Time to date 111hrs 24mins) The end is firmly in sight! My rides tend to be pretty unplanned; I tend to head to an area, circle an area and then colour it in.  This lack of planning has now left me with an east west corridor!  The good news is, this corridor should be pretty simple to complete! Ride 44 to Date Ride 45 means I am now complete east of Shelborne, with downtown being the only sizeable chunk left to go.  I've not saved downtown until last (as many people have assumed), in fact, quite the opposite; I have been putting it off as I'm dreading it! The ride was pleasant, finishing off oak bay.  Sad to finish my last little bit of waterfront, as the waterfront rides are the ones I generally enjoy most. Deer command a lot more respect now they're 'tooled up' The 'Greatest Street Name in Victoria' award goes to............. The end o...

Biggest news in Victoria Right Now!?!?!?

OK, so the biggest news is actually a tragic story which broke all our hearts.  But page A6 of the Times Colonist is a much nicer story to read!!! Ride 48 - Final Ride!!

Ride 48 - 15 Dec 2019 Distance 25.1 km (Distance to date 1532.7 km) Time 2hrs 11mins (Time to date 108hrs 12mins) Put a fork in me........I'm DONE!!! Since February 2019, I have dreamed of this ride.  I'd had all sorts of thoughts about how to end and how I'd mark the occasion.  In the end, I planned nothing.  With my wife heavily pregnant, the rides were becoming a burden and adding a celebration just didn't seem fair. In the end, fate gave me an ending; albeit a simple one.  The final metre of my final street was this................... The cycling gods delivered The last ride was a cold one, with the night's frost melting away as the sun hit. On the way there I also achieved a bucket list level accomplishment!!! Being early meant that downtown wasn't busy, great for a cyclist wanting to meander about looking for his last few random finds of this adventure.
